That time I shot at the Indianapolis Speedway with a lead brick.

I had this very camera. A Mamiya 645, with the speedgrip and a 150 lens. Medium format was a time of experimentation with me. Some experiment with the same sex, or drugs, or both? I went from a 35mm Nikkormat to this and rolls of 120 film. Oh my GOD! Send him to jail! So I took it to indy for qualifying in, I think, 2002. I spent all day doing arm curls with this thing. Pits, garage, main straight, turn three I visited. My bicep was sore and at 15 exposures per roll of film I had to make sure that shot was worth taking. that's right, no 3,000 pictures of digital deletism here! In the end, I wouldn't call the pictures worthless. I have only about two that were anything okay, stashed deep in a green ammo box of other film and prints of my youth and twenties. This camera was sold and the proceeds went to my wife's engagement ring. A very fair trade seeing how digital was just killing the 645 market by 2006. How bad? I got this thing hardly used off ebay for $750 (One honeymoon and that's it, freshly cleaned) and then I sold it for $450 five years later.

For those prosumers who missed film, you didn't miss anything really. Film has it's qualities, but honestly the flexibility of digital systems today are just a goldmine for anyone not wanting to miss that great shot. But that nice heavy "kla-phop!" shutter sound was intoxicating.

Sooo, upload some scans of what you shot! I was on top of Gasoline Alley last year on a practice day shooting next to a guy that still didn't trust digital. I've never shot film before, I want to...but not during a race. I know what my keeper rate looks like at 8 fps when I'm hot, sweaty, and worn out. I can't imagine how bad it would be shooting film.

It sucks. I'm looking for them now and finding everything but those shots. For example I have a whole roll of 35 from the second F1 race at indy...and it's ALL shit.

All of my F1 race shots were with crappy P&S through fences with me having no clue what was going on....so I feel for you there. I actually broke down and bought prints from the photo shop from the F1 races I attended to have JPM sign at Indy this year...which is a huge transition from me having drivers sign my own shots.

I think I'd probably be more comfortable shooting the garages with film, just because of the atmosphere back there.
